Bernedoodle vs. Australian Mountain Doodle: Which Breed Is Right for Your Family?
By Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles
Choosing the right puppy is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your family. Two of today’s most sought-after breeds are the Bernedoodle and the Australian Mountain Doodle. While they share many wonderful qualities, each offers unique characteristics that may make one a better fit for your family’s lifestyle.

At Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles, we’ve spent over 15 years breeding exceptional family companions. As our program has grown, we introduced the Australian Mountain Doodle with one goal in mind—to combine the best qualities of the Australian Shepherd, Bernedoodle, and Poodle while maintaining the calm, loving temperament our families have come to expect.
What Is a Bernedoodle?
A Bernedoodle is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle.

Families love Bernedoodles because they are known for:
-
Calm, affectionate personalities
-
Gentle nature with children
-
Strong desire to be with their family
-
Intelligence and eagerness to please
-
Low-shedding coats
-
Beautiful teddy bear appearance
-
Tri-color markings
Their loving nature has made Bernedoodles one of the most sought-after family companions in the country.
What Is an Australian Mountain Doodle?
An Australian Mountain Doodle is a thoughtfully developed cross that combines the Australian Shepherd, Bernedoodle, and Poodle.
The goal is to combine the intelligence and athletic ability of the Australian Shepherd with the calm, loving personality of the Bernedoodle while maintaining the low-shedding coat and trainability that make doodles such wonderful family companions.
Australian Mountain Doodles are often known for:
-
High intelligence
-
Excellent trainability
-
Athletic ability
-
Loving, family-oriented personalities
-
Beautiful coat colors and patterns
-
Low-shedding coats
-
The possibility of striking blue eyes

Like every breed, however, the temperament of an Australian Mountain Doodle depends greatly on the breeder's breeding goals and selection process.
The Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles Difference
Not all Australian Mountain Doodles are bred the same.
At Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles, we intentionally use a higher percentage of Bernedoodle genetics in our Australian Mountain Doodle program than many breeders.
Why?
Because after more than 15 years of breeding Bernedoodles, we've found that one of their greatest qualities is their calm, stable, family-focused temperament.

A calm, stable temperament.
While the Australian Shepherd contributes incredible intelligence, athleticism, confidence, and versatility, we believe maintaining a stronger Bernedoodle influence helps preserve the relaxed, affectionate personality that many families are looking for.
Our goal isn't to produce an overly energetic dog.
Our goal is to produce a companion that enjoys hiking, playing, swimming, and outdoor adventures—but is equally content relaxing beside the family at the end of the day.
We believe that's the perfect balance.
Selective Breeding Backed by Genetics
Every breeding decision we make is intentional.
We carefully evaluate health testing, temperament, structure, coat quality, and genetics before selecting every breeding pair.
One of the exciting characteristics we are working toward in our Australian Mountain Doodle program is producing puppies with beautiful blue eyes.
Using our understanding of canine genetics, we thoughtfully select breeding pairs that increase the likelihood of producing blue-eyed puppies while never compromising the qualities that matter most—health, temperament, and sound structure.
Our handsome male, Pete, is a wonderful example of this philosophy.
Pete combines striking blue eyes with exceptional temperament, beautiful structure, and the loving personality we strive to produce in every generation.
While blue eyes are certainly eye-catching, they are never our primary focus. Health, temperament, and producing outstanding family companions will always come first.
